Stillwater sat where the coast finally gave up trying to be dramatic. The town was three streets wide and eleven blocks long, pressed between a low bluff of scrub pine and a harbor that never quite emptied at low tide. Weathered clapboard houses leaned into one another along Ocean Avenue, their porches strung with shells that clicked when the wind came off the water.
